City information Istanbul
Why visit Istanbul?
Istanbul is the only major city that naturally spans Europe and Asia, and its old city brings Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman history into a compact walking area. Sultanahmet alone contains Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace and Basilica Cistern within minutes of each other.
For first-time visitors, Istanbul is especially easy to plan because many of the city’s most important landmarks are close together. You can spend the morning exploring underground Byzantine architecture at Basilica Cistern, continue to Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, then walk toward Topkapi Palace for Ottoman history and Bosphorus views.
Best time to visit Istanbul
April–May and September–October offer the best balance of pleasant weather, longer sightseeing days and manageable crowds. These months are ideal if you want to visit outdoor landmarks, walk between attractions and avoid the heaviest summer heat.
June–August is the busiest and hottest period. Popular attractions such as Basilica Cistern, Topkapi Palace and Hagia Sophia can feel crowded, so skip-the-line or timed tickets are more useful during these months.
November–March is quieter and often better for lower hotel prices, but rain is more likely. Many major attractions remain open year-round, making winter a good option for visitors who prefer fewer crowds.
Getting around Istanbul
The T1 tram is the most useful public transport line for visitors, connecting Kabataş, Karaköy, Eminönü, Sirkeci, Sultanahmet, Çemberlitaş, Beyazıt and the Grand Bazaar area. It is especially helpful if your main sightseeing plan focuses on the historic peninsula.
Use an Istanbulkart for public transport and walk within Sultanahmet whenever possible. Once you are near Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Basilica Cistern or Topkapi Palace, walking is usually faster than taking a taxi because the old city can be busy and partly pedestrian-focused.
Suggested 1-day Istanbul itinerary
If you only have one day in Istanbul, focus on Sultanahmet. This keeps your route simple and avoids wasting time in traffic.
- Morning: Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque
- Midday: Basilica Cistern with skip-the-line entry
- Afternoon: Topkapi Palace and surrounding gardens
- Evening: walk toward Eminönü or enjoy a Bosphorus view
This route works well because all major stops are close together. If you want to add more sights, the Grand Bazaar is also reachable by tram or a longer walk from Sultanahmet.
How to book attraction tickets
For major sights, book online in advance between April and October. Skip-the-line tickets are most useful for Basilica Cistern, Topkapi Palace and Hagia Sophia visitor-gallery access, especially during weekends, holidays and cruise-ship arrival days.
If your trip is short, compare single attraction tickets with combo options. A single ticket is usually best if you only want to visit one landmark, while a combo ticket can be more convenient if you plan to visit several major sights in the same day.
